Health mediators project

Health mediators project

The project started during the 1990s in Romania. It was the first after the communist period which targeted Rromani women.

More than 600 women from low-educated Roma communities were trained to become health mediators. The aim was to empower women and their communities to increase and improve Roma access to health services. This programme was subsequently recognized as a good practice in Romania and exported as a model to other countries in Central and Eastern Europe.
